Word of the Week: “dreich”

Wow what a busy week!
(Which does not rhyme with “dreich”,
in spite of how it sounds when I pronounce it!)

My Scottish friends say this one
and it sounds lovely.
Even if it actually means
a combination of
“cold”, “wet”, “dark” and “gloomy”.

“It’s pretty dreich today”
(“It’s pretty horrible today”)

Brrr!

  1. This is the great thing about Scots – the words are simply more descriptive than English. There is no one word to sum up the sort of weather “dreich” describes. Mmmm, I love when your word of the week pops up.
